The Flames Beat Bognor Amazons
A second win of the season takes the team to a 2-1 record so far. We overcame another tough hurdle to beat the newest team in the league. Make no mistake that Bognor Amazons are an experienced side: despite not having played in the Sussex League for a few years, they have been playing in the Solent League against strong teams and beat the Brighton Cougars in last year's Sussex League Cup Competition Final. So, when we got off to a dream start and a 1st quarter 19-5 up, it was frankly amazing! The second quarter saw the Amazons redressing the balance somewhat and we lost it 10-4, finding ourselves struggling to put the ball in the hoop. We stepped up our defence and started to make some steals to put them on the back foot and give us more space on offence in the second half. The key was that we really wanted the ball and everyone fought hard to get it and take care of it.
It was a great team effort with enthusiastic support from the bench and club supporters, as well as good advice from our new coach, Anne. We managed to stay ahead the whole game. However, the Amazons got to within 7 points several times in the last quarter so it felt like we still had plenty of work to do to stay on top. Notable scoring performances from Katie (17 points) and Kara (11 points) kept us afloat – but 8 out of 10 who played got on the score sheet which bodes very well for future matches! With a little more work on good positioning, passing, and of course shooting, we can realise the potential in everyone and bring more success to the team this season and beyond. Well done Flames and bring on the first away match v Holbrook!
