The Flames Beat Bognor Amazons

A second win of the season takes the team to a 2-1 record so far. We overcame another tough hurdle to beat the newest team in the league. Make no mistake that Bognor Amazons are an experienced side: despite not having played in the Sussex League for a few years, they have been playing in the Solent League against strong teams and beat the Brighton Cougars in last year's Sussex League Cup Competition Final. So, when we got off to a dream start and a 1st quarter 19-5 up, it was frankly amazing! The second quarter saw the Amazons redressing the balance somewhat and we lost it 10-4, finding ourselves struggling to put the ball in the hoop. We stepped up our defence and started to make some steals to put them on the back foot and give us more space on offence in the second half. The key was that we really wanted the ball and everyone fought hard to get it and take care of it.

It was a great team effort with enthusiastic support from the bench and club supporters, as well as good advice from our new coach, Anne. We managed to stay ahead the whole game. However, the Amazons got to within 7 points several times in the last quarter so it felt like we still had plenty of work to do to stay on top. Notable scoring performances from Katie (17 points) and Kara (11 points) kept us afloat – but 8 out of 10 who played got on the score sheet which bodes very well for future matches! With a little more work on good positioning, passing, and of course shooting, we can realise the potential in everyone and bring more success to the team this season and beyond. Well done Flames and bring on the first away match v Holbrook!

Losing in Local Derby Match

The Flames Lose V Brighton Cougars

Brighton Phoenix Flames lost their second game of the 2012-2013 Season on Tuesday night at Dorothy Stringer. Brighton Cougars won the local derby. They were simply the better team! They outran and outscored the Flames, who managed to perform better in the last two quarters but still could not close the generous gap on the scoreboard. The Flames are anything but sore losers so we graciously took the blow and we will work harder in preparation for when the Cougars visit us at BHASVIC January 2013. Maybe we will gain extra strength with Xmas Turkeys and Nut Roasts (for the veggies!). Well done Cougars!

The Flames Take the Match V Crawley Lightning

Brighton Phoenix Flames played their first game of the new season on Monday night. We had a great home crowd to support us and managed to satisfy them with a win over Crawley Lightning (37-30). It was pretty low scoring emphasising the tough defence at both ends and not-too-hot shooting with first game nerves felt by many. The game was tied for much of the first three quarters and we struggled to make an impact on their big zone. All of the Flames took their fair share of knocks against physically tough opponents. We fielded 11 players and have more registered than ever before boding well for a strong season ahead. It was fantastic to see the scoring spread over so many members of the team.

Well done to the Flames on their first win and here’s to many more to come...
